Board of Directors

Lee Schroeder, President; Nominating/Election Committee. Lee is a nuclear physicist who retired recently from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory after nearly 36 years. A former director of the lab’s Nuclear Science Division and scientific director for the lab’s Bevalac accelerator complex, he served as a program manager and nuclear physics advisor to the U.S. Department of Energy and as an assistant director in the White House Office of Science. He and his wife, Beverly, have lived in their Saranap home since 1971. Lee brings to the SCA board a lifetime of experience managing and interacting with a diverse range of individuals and organizations —“often, but not always, with shared goals,” he notes, “but, hopefully, always with a willingness to be fair and open-minded.” Lee was elected to the SCA board in July and elected president in October of 2008.
Tighe O’Hanrahan, Vice President; Legal Committee; Finance Committee. Tighe is a family physician who has been on the staff of John Muir Hospital since 1976. He has been on the board of an 800-member physicians group for eight years, serving previously on its Finance Committee and now as chair of the Governance Committee. Tighe and his wife of 38 years, Claudia, have lived in the Saranap for 24 years and raised four children here. He was appointed to the SCA board in 2005 and elected the following year.
Jonathan Becker, Treasurer; Legal Committee; Finance Committee. Jonathan is a financial planner with an independent financial advisory firm in San Ramon. Prior to becoming a financial planner, he co-owned a small business and previous to that practiced law. Jonathan lived in Hawaii before relocating to the Saranap five years ago with his wife, Valerie and son. He was appointed to the board in 2009.
Breese Berkowitz, Service Committee; Nominating/Election Committee; Membership Committee. Breese has been an attorney with the Contra Costa County public defender’s office since 1993. Breese moved to the Saranap in 2005. She and her husband, Barney, who is also a public defender with the county, have two young children. She was appointed to the board in 2009.
J. David Dacus, Application Review Committee; Nominating/Election Committee. David is an architect in private practice in the Saranap. Between 2002 and 2008, he was director of design and director of quality for an architecture and engineering firm in Danville. He served on the staff of the prestigious Center for Environmental Structure in Berkeley for four years. In his 23 years as an architect, he has written design guidelines and reviewed hundreds of applications. David has lived in the Saranap since 1981. His wife, Rachel, is a Saranap-based fundraising consultant to healthcare facilities and nonprofits. David was elected to the board in 2008.
Charles Huddleston, Application Review Committee; Nominating/Election Committee. Charles is a building designer and residential construction consultant. He has spent five decades in the construction field, serving as a general building contractor, manager, administrator, and teacher. He was co-founder of Berkeley’s popular Owner Builder Center. He was also a project manager and property-acquisition administrator for Habitat for Humanity. He lives in the Saranap with his wife, Joyce (he’s been here for 26 years), and has four children. Charles was elected to the SCA board in 2008.
Stephanie Monson, Service Committee; Membership Committee. Stephanie is real estate agent specializing in residential sales. Her experience helping people buy and sell homes “requires that I understand the zoning laws, permit process, as well as the value of good design in home construction and remodeling.” She is “committed to seeing the Saranap area maintain the charming qualities that draw homebuyers to it.” Stephanie has worked in the Saranap for 26 years and lived here for four. She is married and has three children. Stephanie was elected to the board in 2006 and reelected in 2008.
James Piepergerdes, Service Committee. Jim is an ear, nose, and throat physician who specializes in allergies. He first lived in the Saranap between 1979 and 1993, when he relocated to Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Laura, returned to the Saranap in 2008. He is currently in private practice in San Francisco. He joined the SCA board in 2009.
Mimi Salamat, Service Committee. Mimi is a clinical audiologist with an office on Boulevard Way. She has spent most of her career in academic settings but decided to devote her life to direct patient care when she moved to Rossmoor recently from Washington state to be closer to her family. She was named to the SCA board in 2009.
Chris Schroeder. Chris was appointed to the board in 2009. (Biographical information to come.)
Scott Wallace, Communication Committee. The editor of SCA’s newsletter, Scott is an information specialist who has spent most of his career in the nonprofit sector. An ex-Marine, he works for The Meher Schools and serves as an editorial consultant on numerous outside projects. He was married in the Saranap, and he and his wife, Wendy Ritchey, a psychologist whose practice is here, raised their son here. Scott has lived in the Saranap for 23 years. He was elected to the SCA board in 2007.

Board Secretary  (non-voting position)

Lynn Hogarth. Lynn is an experienced information technology professional who most recently has specialized in coaching large teams on complex software-development processes. She has lived in the Saranap for 27 years with her English-born husband, Peter. The couple has two grown children. Lynn has been board secretary since 2009.
