Sanctuary Construction Begins

Construction of Sufism Reoriented’s new Boulevard Way sanctuary began February 14, when contractors began pouring the foundation, according to the spring issue of the church’s Neighborhood Newsletter. The county issued the building permit for the project a week earlier. All the work that had been done on the property prior to that was to prepare the site for construction.

Ground for the project was broken on May 24, 2012. Excavation of the site – involving 3,500 truckloads of soil – took place between September and November.

When the foundation is complete, contractors will pour the concrete walls and roof slab of the concourse, or below-grade, portion of the building, then the walls of the ground-level building, and finally the roof and domes. Between the upper and lower levels will be a seven-foot interstitial space, where many of the building’s mechanical, electrical, and fire-protection components will be located. This phase is expected to take about 10 months.

Because of the many variables involved, Sufism Reoriented can’t say for certain when the project will be completed, but the newsletter reports that the church hopes to vacate its current building at 1300 Boulevard Way and begin occupying the new sanctuary by the spring of 2015.
