Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Neighbors Helping Neighbors includes both a service component and a social activity component.

Service Program volunteers provide assistance to neighbors who, because of illness, age, the birth of a child, or other circumstances need assistance with the "little things" they once took for granted: changing a lightbulb, shopping for groceries or cooking a meal, getting to a doctor's or hairdresser's appointment. Some of those we help are older people who are isolated and lonely and just need someone to talk to. Others are full-time caregivers to homebound spouses sometimes need some "personal time."

Volunteers are paired with neighbors based on the neighbors  needs and the volunteers   background and interests. If the program can t provide the kind of help someone needs, he or she is referred to a program or agency that can. Volunteers undergo a thorough background check and are trained by experts before providing services. Neighbors Helping Neighbors  eight-member leadership team includes two physicians, a geriatric care worker, and others with extensive community-service experience.

If circumstances make the "little things in life" a challenge for you or someone you know, please leave a message on the SCA s voicemail line (946-9185) and a Neighbors Helping Neighbors program coordinator will contact you. Your information will be kept confidential. All our services are offered free of charge.

Want to help? If you'd like to make a difference in someone's life, download and complete the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Volunteer Interest Form and return it to the address indicated. Or you can e-mail us at Jim.Saranap@gmail.com, or leave a voicemail at 946-9185.

The Social Activities Program has organized a number of neighborhood potlucks and is looking for volunteers to host activities such as book clubs, card parties, movie nights, and neighborhood teas. If you'd like us to help you organize a social activity, give us a call at 946-9185. We ll be in touch!

Toy & Clothing Boutique

The idea behind the SCA s Toy & Clothing Boutique is deceptively simple: Neighbors donate "gently used" clothing, toys, and books their children have outgrown and take home items others have donated. There s no admission charge, everything is free, and it isn't necessary to donate something to take something.

The Boutique is held four times a year The Meher Schools, on Leland Dr. in Lafayette, in space donated by the school and the Searchlight Bookstore, which is housed at the school. Clothing is neatly displayed in Searchlight s pleasant, boutique-like setting. Toys and books are neatly arranged in the school's staff lounge, across the hall. Refreshments are provided.

Boutiques are generally held in early fall, early winter, around Valentine's Day, and in late spring. Watch our Website for the date of the next Boutique.

Want to help? The Boutique is made possible by a small army of neighborhood volunteers that spends more than 200 hours preparing for and staging the event. If you'd like to join them, please contact Stephanie Monson at Stephanie.Saranap@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 946-9185.

Safe Neighborhoods Program

The Saranap is a relatively safe area, but it's not crime-free. A month rarely passes without at least one home or auto burglary or other crime. One of the most effective deterrents against crime is Neighborhood Watch. The SCA s Safe Neighborhoods program offers information and assistance to those who want to start groups in their neighborhoods or who already have one. If you're interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch program in your area, e-mail us at NHNSafeNeighborhoods@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 946-9185.

Application Review

The board of directors' Application Review Committee reviews planning-permit applications for projects in the Saranap sent to the SCA for its feedback by the county's Department of Conservation and Development. If you have a background in architecture, planning, construction, or a related field and would like to lend your expertise to this process, please contact David Dacus, committee chair, at David.Saranap@gmail.com, or leave us a voice message at 946-9185.

Community Meetings. The Application Review Committee is also responsible for conducting Community Meetings focused on larger construction projects in the Saranap, such as Sufism Reoriented s application to build a church and the King Estate development. Information about these meetings is posted on our Website.

Property-improvement workshops. In addition, the committee conducts free property-improvement workshops for our Saranap neighbors. If you'd be interested in attending one, let David Dacus know or leave us a voicemail.
