Dec. 10 vote puts SCA
on track for non-profit status

The SCA membership on Dec. 10 overwhelmingly approved a change in the organization’s purpose statement that will allow us to apply to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status. This will enable us to receive tax-exempt donations so we can better serve the Saranap community with expanded programs. It will also exempt us from paying taxes on funds we receive.
Our previous purpose statement read: “To preserve and foster the established character and quality of the Saranap as a quiet, residential neighborhood, and to improve the well being of our community.” The new purpose statement, using formal wording required by the IRS, reads: ”To improve the general well-being of the Saranap community by serving the residents by charitable means, according to Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).”
To apply for tax-exempt status, we’re also required to stipulate what would become of any remaining funds, such as those from membership dues, in the event that our organization dissolves (which is not something we anticipate). The SCA board recommended, and the membership approved, the American Red Cross as the beneficiary of any funds.
A special meeting was called to approve the changes as the law requires that a majority of members vote in favor of the change. That meeting took place Dec. 10 at Grace Presbyterian Church on Tice Valley Blvd.; 127 voting members attended, and 126 voted to approve the changes.
